Central Government Designates Kechobahal Mega Freight Maintenance Depot as Special Railway Project

The Ministry of Railways, through the South Eastern Railway’s Construction Organization, issued a formal notification on October 27, 2025, to classify a major infrastructure undertaking in Odisha as a Special Railway Project. This administrative instrument, identified as S.O. 4898(E), was promulgated to facilitate the establishment of a Mega freight maintenance depot at Kechobahal. Situated within the Chakradharpur Division of the South Eastern Railway, the project is dedicated to Periodic Overhauling (the comprehensive dismantling, repair, and replacement of parts in railway vehicles at fixed intervals) and Routine Overhauling (the scheduled maintenance of freight wagons to ensure operational safety between major repairs). The notification confirmed that the designation took effect from the date of its publication in the Official Gazette, marking a significant step in the expansion of railway maintenance capabilities in the region.

The legislation provided: “In exercise of the powers conferred by clause (37A) of section 2 of the Railways Act, 1989, the Central Government hereby notifies the following project as Special Railway Project, as mentioned in column (2) of the Table below in the State mentioned in column (3) of the Table, with effect from the date of publication of this notification in the Official Gazette.”
