Delhi HC Working Saturdays Notification Deferred

The Delhi High Court has deferred its earlier decision declaring the first and third Saturdays of every month as court sitting days. The announcement came through an official notification dated 17th July, 2026, as attached hereunder.
Delhi HC Notification Deferring Working Saturdays
In a notification dated 17th July 2026, the Delhi High Court's Registrar General stated that the Hon'ble Full Court, in its meeting held on 9th July 2026, resolved to defer operation of its earlier decision. That earlier decision, dated 22nd December 2025 and issued vide Notification No. 58/G-4/Genl.-I/DHC dated 15 January 2026, had declared the first and third Saturdays of every month as working days for the Delhi High Court.
The Delhi High Court working Saturdays deferring notification states that a Committee will be constituted by the Chief Justice of Delhi High Court to look into all relevant aspects concerning working Saturdays. The notification is signed by the Registrar General.
Background: The Original Notification on Working Saturdays
The decision traces back to Delhi High Court working Saturdays notification issued by the Delhi High Court on 15th January 2026, which declared the first and third Saturdays of every month as official court sitting days. This marked a departure from the earlier practice under which Saturdays were generally treated as holidays, except in limited circumstances.
Before this, in October 2025, the Delhi High Court had introduced an arrangement under which each Bench was required to sit on one Saturday every month to expedite case disposal.
Opposition from the Bar
The move to introduce working Saturdays faced opposition from the Delhi High Court Bar Association (DHCBA), which called for a boycott of Court proceedings starting 4th April 2026. The DHCBA had objected to the October 2025 arrangement as well, stating that the Bar had not been consulted before the decision was taken and that it would create logistical difficulties for lawyers.
