Election Commission Amends List of Assistant Electoral Registration Officers for Tamil Nadu Constituencies

The Election Commission of India issued a Notification, No. SRO G-38/2025, on December 24, 2025, published in the Tamil Nadu Government Gazette Extraordinary, to amend the list of Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs) for various Assembly Constituencies within the State of Tamil Nadu. This delegated legislation, dated November 28, 2025, came into force upon its publication in the Official Gazette. The amendment was made by the Election Commission of India in exercise of the powers conferred by sub-section (1) of Section 13(C) of the Representation of the People Act, 1950 (Act 43 of 1950), and specifically modifies Notification No. 429/TN/2025(2) dated May 8, 2025, which had been amended from time to time. The earlier legal position allowed for the designation of such officers, and this amendment addresses the practical necessity of expanding this cadre to manage specific electoral activities. The statutory gap or issue addressed is the need for a comprehensive and intensive revision of electoral rolls, which necessitates a larger and more diverse group of officials to carry out the detailed work involved. The notification explicitly states the temporary nature of these appointments, clarifying their role and tenure. The legislation provided: “The above Officers have been appointed for the purpose of Special Intensive Revision and shall cease to function immediately after the completion of Special Intensive Revision in the State of Tamil Nadu.” This indicates a focused effort to update voter information, ensuring that the electoral rolls are current and inclusive. The amendments introduce new obligations for the designated officers, requiring them to undertake specific duties related to electoral registration for a defined period.
