New Chief Justices recommended for 4 High Courts; Justice Sanjay K. Agrawal named for Rajasthan HC

The Supreme Court Collegium, in its meetings held on 6th August 2026 and 31st August 2026, has issued three separate statements recommending the elevation, appointment, and transfer of four High Court judges to the post of Chief Justice or to a different High Court. 

In its meeting held on 31st August 2026, the Collegium recommended the elevation of three sitting judges as Chief Justices of High Courts. Mr. Justice Sanjay K. Agrawal, presently a Judge of the High Court of Chhattisgarh, has been recommended for appointment as Chief Justice of the Rajasthan High Court. Mr. Justice Alpesh Yeshvant Kogje, presently a Judge of the High Court of Gujarat, has been recommended for appointment as Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court. Dr. Justice Pushpendra Singh Bhati, presently a Judge of the High Court of Rajasthan, has been recommended for appointment as Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh. In a separate statement issued the same day, the Collegium recommended the transfer of Mr. Justice Sanjay K. Agrawal, Judge, High Court of Chhattisgarh, to the Rajasthan High Court. 

Separately, in its meeting held on 6th August 2026, the Collegium recommended the appointment of Mr. Justice Krushna Ram Mohapatra, presently a Judge of the High Court of Orissa, as Chief Justice of the High Court of Chhattisgarh. The recommendation was made consequent upon the retirement of the incumbent Chief Justice of the Chhattisgarh High Court on 4th September 2026.
