The Orissa High Court at Cuttack, in an order dated 15th July 2026, restrained Ele Animations Pvt. Ltd. from releasing the Mahaprabhu Jagannath animated movie on 17th July, 2026, or thereafter, without leave of the Court or until the next date, whichever is earlier. The order was passed by a Division Bench comprising Chief Justice Harish Tandon and Justice Murahari Sri Raman in a writ petition.

Petition for Mahaprabhu Jagannath Movie Ban

The matter was a Public Interest Litigation (PIL) filed by the petitioners seeking a writ of mandamus directing the Central Board of Film Certification to revoke the Certificate, and to restrain the opposite parties from allowing the public exhibition, screening, and release of the Mahaprabhu Jagannath movie within the State of Odisha.

The Court issued notice in both the writ petition and the accompanying interlocutory application against Mahaprabhu Jagannath movie release date, directing that notice be sent to the parties concerned.

Background of Mahaprabhu Jagannath Movie 2026 Controversy

According to the petition, Ele Animations Pvt. Ltd. published the teaser of Mahaprabhu Jagannath animated movie on YouTube on 6th June 2026. The said trailer announced the Mahaprabhu Jagannath movie release date as 10th July 2026. This was followed by widespread dissent over the title and content of the film among people across Odisha, including the Shree Jagannath Temple Administration.

This reaction led the producer of Mahaprabhu Jagannath Movie 2026 to screen the film in an auditorium before the Temple Administration and the Gajapati Maharaja of Puri. Several objections were raised therein regarding the depiction of incidents said to be opposed to established religious traditions, spiritual history, and long-practised customs. An article in The Indian Express was reported on the screening of Mahaprabhi Jagannath animated movie and the objections raised by those present. At that screening, the producer reportedly assured that changes would be made to align the film with established religious belief, tradition, and cultural aspects.

Objections Raised Over Mahaprabhu Jagannath Movie Content

The Orissa High Court’s order on Mahaprabhu Jagannath movie ban appeal records that, without making the substantial changes assured earlier, either in the narrative or in the animated depiction, the producer announced that the film would now release on 17th July 2026. The petitioners set out the specific portions found objectionable:

  • The fictional childhood and personal adventures of Lord Jagannath as portrayed in the film, said to be inconsistent with the religious texts of the Skandha Purana and the Brahma Purana.
  • The animated character depicting Lord Jagannath shown speaking and behaving in an invented manner, said to be at odds with devotional literature and temple traditions practiced since the establishment of the Lord Jagannath Temple.
  • Fictional battle and adventure sequences involving Lord Jagannath, which the petitioners contended could tarnish devotees' beliefs and cause large-scale commotion.

Producer's Response in the Mahaprabhu Jagannath Movie Ban Appeal

Ele Animations Pvt. Ltd. took the position that the film's first screening carried a disclaimer stating it was a fictional story with no nexus to reality, and that there was no attempt to harm devotees' beliefs or corrode religious tradition. It was further contended that Article 19(1)(a) of the Constitution of India covers the freedom of expression and speech, entitling every citizen to express ideas and thoughts, and that fundamental rights cannot be invaded. The producer also submitted that the petitioners had approached the Court at "the fag end" with what was described as a sinister motive to prevent the Mahaprabhu Jagannath movie release, after considerable money had already been invested in the film.

Court's Observations on Freedom of Expression and Religious Sentiment

The Bench observed that expression takes multiple forms: printed media, newspapers, articles, audio, and film, but that once expressed through a movie to be screened in theatres, it must be judged on its overall impact on the public, since films aimed at amusement can also create a significant impact on viewers' minds, particularly where religious belief is involved.

The Court noted that while freedom of expression and speech under Article 19 must be protected, a balance has to be maintained with the restrictions permissible under Article 19(2) of the Constitution of India. It observed that a film exercising this freedom must still account for its effect on the thoughts and actions of the public, and that where it risks shattering sentiments, emotions, or religious belief in a manner resulting in unrest in a peaceful society, this cannot be allowed.

Mahaprabhu Jagannath Movie Release Date: Interim Restraint

The Bench recorded that makers intended to release Mahaprabhi Jagannath animated movie without incorporating the suggested changes, coinciding with the Rath Yatra commencing on 16th July 2026, a period expected to draw a large gathering of devotees. The Orissa High Court Court held that screening the film on 17th July 2026, in these circumstances, would be counterproductive, and that the objectionable content highlighted in the PIL needed to be examined in a threadbare manner after the exchange of affidavits between the parties.

On this basis, the Court restrained Ele Animations Pvt. Ltd., from releasing the animated film "Mahaprabhu Jagannath" on 17th July 2026, or thereafter, without leave of the Court or until the next date, whichever is earlier.
