President Appoints Five New Judges to the Supreme Court

The President of India has appointed five as Judges of the Supreme Court of India. The announcement was made by the Minister of Law and Justice, Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal vide official X handle. The newly elevated Supreme Court Judes include four sitting High Court Chief Justices and one Senior Advocate practising before the Supreme Court, as listed below:
(i) Justice Sheel Nagu, Chief Justice of the Punjab and Haryana High Court (Parent High Court: Madhya Pradesh);
(ii) Justice Shree Chandrashekhar, Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court (Parent High Court: Jharkhand);
(iii) Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva, Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court (Parent High Court: Delhi);
(iv) Justice Arun Palli, Chief Justice of the Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh High Court (Parent High Court: Punjab and Haryana); and
(v) Mrs. Venkita Subramani Mohana, Senior Advocate, Supreme Court of India.
About Five New Supreme Court Judges
The Supreme Court Collegium had earlier recommended the elevation of these 4 High Court Chief Justices and a Senior Advocate to the Supreme Court vide statement dated 27th May, 2026. To introduce the 5 newly appointed judges:
- Justice Sheel Nagu enrolled as an advocate on October 5, 1987. He practised on the civil and constitutional sides before the High Court of Madhya Pradesh at Jabalpur. He was appointed as Additional Judge of the Madhya Pradesh High Court on May 27, 2011, and was confirmed as Permanent Judge on May 23, 2013. During his tenure of over twelve years as a judge at the Madhya Pradesh High Court, he authored more than 499 reported judgments. He served as Acting Chief Justice of the Madhya Pradesh High Court from May 25, 2024, before being appointed as Chief Justice of the High Court of Punjab and Haryana on July 9, 2024.
- Justice Shree Chandrashekhar enrolled as an advocate with the Delhi State Bar Council on December 9, 1993. Over approximately nineteen years of practice, he appeared in around 3,500 cases, primarily before the Supreme Court of India, including matters in both criminal and civil law. He also served as Standing Counsel for several statutory bodies and state governments. He was appointed Additional Judge of the Jharkhand High Court on January 17, 2013, and became a Permanent Judge on June 27, 2014. He served as Acting Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court from December 29, 2023, before being transferred to the Rajasthan High Court in July 2024, and thereafter to the Bombay High Court in July 2025. He was appointed Chief Justice of the Bombay High Court on September 5, 2025.
- Justice Sanjeev Sachdeva enrolled as an advocate with the Bar Council of Delhi on August 1, 1988, and practised before the Supreme Court of India, the Delhi High Court, and the District Courts of Delhi. He qualified as an Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court of India in 1995, receiving second prize in the examination. He served as Standing Counsel for the Bar Council of India for over twenty years and as Senior Panel Lawyer for the Union of India for over ten years. He was designated as Senior Advocate by the Delhi High Court in July 2011. He was appointed Additional Judge of the Delhi High Court on April 17, 2013, and confirmed as Permanent Judge on March 18, 2015. He was transferred to the Madhya Pradesh High Court on May 31, 2024, and was appointed its Chief Justice on July 17, 2025.
- Justice Arun Palli commenced his legal practice at the High Court of Punjab and Haryana. He gained expertise in civil, criminal, constitutional, revenue, industrial, and labour law. He served as Additional Advocate General for Punjab from September 1, 2004, to March 2007. He was designated as Senior Advocate on April 26, 2007. He also appeared before the Supreme Court of India, the Delhi High Court, and the Himachal Pradesh High Court. He was elevated to the Bench of the Punjab and Haryana High Court on December 28, 2013. He served as Executive Chairman of the Haryana State Legal Services Authority from May 31, 2023, and was nominated as a Member of the Governing Body of the National Legal Services Authority (NALSA) on October 31, 2023. He was appointed Chief Justice of the High Court of Jammu & Kashmir and Ladakh on April 16, 2025.
- Senior Advocate V. Mohana worked in the chambers of Mr. M. Panchapakesan, a civil trial lawyer in Coimbatore, before relocating to New Delhi where she worked with Justice Indu Malhotra during her practice, and subsequently with Mr. C.S. Vaidyanathan, Senior Advocate. She qualified as Advocate-on-Record of the Supreme Court of India in 1996 and has since practised independently before the Supreme Court of India, the Delhi High Court, and the National Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission, among other forums. She served as a Panel Lawyer for the Government of India. She was designated as Senior Advocate by the Full Court of the Supreme Court of India on April 23, 2015.
