Union Home Minister and Minister of Cooperation Amit Shah released the books “The Bench, the Bar, and the Bizarre” and “The Lawful and the Awful” authored by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta. The Delhi event was attended by several dignitaries, including the Chief Justice of India, Justice Surya Kant.

Observations on the Books

Discussing the books authored by Solicitor General Tushar Mehta, Shah said that it presents courtroom experiences, humour, satire, and aspects of human nature associated with legal proceedings while maintaining the seriousness of the law.

He said the books include references to courtroom poetry, distinct styles of judges, and unusual incidents connected with judicial proceedings. He also noted that the books raise questions about future challenges posed by artificial intelligence and modern technology to the judiciary.

Reference to Mother’s Day

SG Tushar Mehta dedicated the books to his mother and said the release coincided with Mother’s Day. During his address, he referred to his own daily practice of paying tribute to his mother after her passing.

Balance Between Judiciary and Executive

Referring to constitutional institutions, Home Minister Amit Shah said that the Constitution established institutions to maintain balance rather than oppose one another. He noted that while the executive takes decisions, the judiciary carries out constitutional review of those decisions. As per him, constitutional conventions and institutional propriety have largely remained intact over the decades and have been strengthened through traditions. He added that democracy derives strength from institutional balance and mutual respect for constitutional propriety rather than confrontation.
