Sikkim Government Establishes District Hospitals in Pakyong and Soreng

The Government of Sikkim, through its Health and Family Welfare Department, issued a significant notification on July 10, 2024, which was subsequently published in the Sikkim Government Gazette Extraordinary on July 11, 2024. This notification, numbered 69/HFWD/2024-25, formally established two new District Hospitals in the recently formed Pakyong and Soreng districts. The issuance of this notification stemmed from the State Government's earlier decision to establish Pakyong District and Soreng District, which was formalized by Notification number 26/LPAD/2021 on December 13, 2021. Recognizing the imperative to provide essential healthcare infrastructure in these new administrative units, the State Government deemed it expedient to establish dedicated District Hospitals under the administrative control of their respective Chief Medical Officers.

The legislation provided: “Now therefore, the State Government is hereby pleased to establish the following District Hospitals in the aforementioned two newly formed districts, as under, namely: - 1. District Hospital Pakyong at Singtam, Pakyong district, 2. District Hospital Soreng at Soreng, Soreng district.” These newly established District Hospitals are mandated to operate according to the manpower prescriptions outlined in the Indian Public Health Standard norms. Furthermore, the notification meticulously delineates the territorial jurisdiction of all six District Hospitals across the state. This includes the newly established District Hospital Pakyong and District Hospital Soreng, alongside the existing District Hospital Gangtok (Topakhani, Gangtok District), District Hospital Gyalshing (Gyalshing, Gyalshing District), District Hospital Namchi (Namchi, Namchi District), and District Hospital Mangan (Mangan, Mangan District). For each district hospital, the notification specifies the associated Community Health Centres (CHCs), Health and Wellness Centre-Primary Health Centres (HWC-PHCs), and Health and Wellness Centre-Sub Health Centres (HWC-SHCs) that fall under their respective purviews. The notification came into force upon its publication in the Official Gazette.
