Supreme Court Directs Compliance Report and Lists Matter After Seven Months

A bench of Justice J.B. Pardiwala and Justice K.V. Viswanathan heard Writ Petition (Civil) No. 295 of 2012 filed by S. Rajaseekaran against the Union of India and others, along with miscellaneous applications including IA No. 50798/2025, IA No. 43387/2025 and IA No. 119142/2024; Mr. Gaurav Agrawal, senior advocate, appeared as amicus curiae in the matter. The hearing concluded with pronouncement of a reportable order on 7 October 2025.

The Court directed implementation of the directions recorded in the reportable order and ordered periodic monitoring of compliance. The central outcome was that the Registry would list the matter for review after seven months to receive a compliance report and note further progress; the Court also directed urgent listing of two interlocutory applications upon mention. The Court, in its reasoning, observed: "Various directions have been passed as contained in the Reportable Order. Background The petition was instituted in 2012 and proceeded as a public interest litigation listed before the Supreme Court's PIL-W section. The short pronouncement recorded that "various directions" were issued as part of a reportable order without setting out detailed operative directions in the brief record of proceedings placed on file. The Registry was directed to relist the matter after seven months to enable the parties and the Court to report and assess compliance and further progress.
